Yes isn't that wonderful! I have fond memories of that place and had been really sad to hear that the famous Kepler's had had to close recently. Some people have come forward and invested in this special bookshop in Menlo Park.

The animals need your help, please donate to these charities. Pleople who have lost everything are suffering even more because they are worried and devestated by having lost thier pets. Many of them were forced to leave behind thier animals and not allowed to take them to the shelters. These organisations are rescuing lost, trapped and abandoned pets in the Katrina aftermath..

I understand that the Canadian fisheries is in trouble and that many fishermen are unable to support their families. Also there is a belief that seals have contributed to the crash of fish populations. But I believe this way of solving the problem is .... horrible!

One of the problems is also the market. Are seal skin coats becoming popular again? If you have any friends who are thinking of buying one (?????) please ask them to think about where it came from.

I was on a whale watch boat in the 1970's before the marine mammal protection act was in place. It was spring and quite cold. A very friendly and enthusiastic woman was wearing the warmest thing there was in those days... a seal skin coat and couldn't understand why no one would talk to her.

Sometimes it is really hard to make the connection between the live animal and the things you wear or eat, I am guilty of that too.yeimaya

I could tag every word of this post just to show up in the pages tagged with tags, but it would take too long, When is Blogger going to put an add Technorati Tag button? Flickr tags are very usefull for finding photos to add to blog posts. (see above) Pehaps I should search the Flickr tags to find photos for my photoblog Flickrzen, no that would be too easy, the recently uploaded photos page is much more exciting!

"Mind Hacks" Tips & Tools for Using your Brain in the World By Tom Stafford, Matt Webb - Reviewed for Bookzen by KJR

"Mind Hacks" is an excellent starting place for the exploration of the human mind, apparently a very popular interest right now. Curiosity regarding how we think seems in vogue, since so many are reading one of a group of recently published books on the subject. Including "Mind Hacks" there is "The Mind Map" by Tony Buzan and Barry Buzan, "Blink : The Power of Thinking Without Thinking" by Malcolm Gladwell" The Undiscovered Mind" by John Horgan, "On Intelligence" by Jeff Hawkins (PalmPilot creator) and Sandra Blakeslee, and from Steven Johnson, who wrote the Foreword to "Mind Hacks, " there is "Mind Wide Open. "

All of these delve into that uncharted land called how our grey matter works and how we can live better lives by knowing more about it. Each of these books has a delightfully different take on the subject, and "Mind Hacks" itself is full of references for further reading. Is it more than just a co-incidence that these books are all out right now, being talked about, blogged about, and voraciously read? Why this insatiable synchronicity of people wanting to know more about how we are made and how we think?

In more classical studies, "Mind Hacks" would be filed under physical and cultural anthropology. And though you will be introduced to words like limbic, cortex and cerebellum, keeping track of technical medical terms is not essential for understanding and learning much from this book. While it seems written for popular audiences, and uses everyday examples to illustrate how we as human beings tend to think, and why, "Mind Hacks" is helpfully structured to take you just as deep as you want to go.

As to whether the mind can be hacked, just ask a songwriter, movie producer or ad exec; though by "hacks," the authors really mean examples, and there are hundreds. For instance, why do we tend to see faces when we look at clouds? Why do we scrutinize other peoples' faces so intently? Why, if we see six of the same thing, do we tend to see the seventh object as the same, too, even if it isn't? Why do we smell chalk when we think of Dick, Jane, and that "silly, silly Spot?" What do we really find irresistibly interesting and what bores us to death? Did left-handed people evolve differently and why do they have more traffic accidents? Why are some people better at math? Why do sunglasses make the world more interesting visually? (It's all in the mind.) Why do people respond differently to the same instructions? And by implication, what is the best way to design a web page? All of this is covered in "Mind Hacks" including which sectors of the brain are responsible, and how the research was done.

"Mind Hacks" is a good starting place for exploring your mind, partly because it would fit nicely with some of the other books mentioned here and in the book itself, but also because Mind Hacks is at the center of an expanding culture of exploration and investigation of mental phenomena,including blogs about "Mind Hacks" and related phenomena (just technorati "Mind Hacks" for instance.) There are the sites of the book's publisher O'Reilly for starters and a page relating to topics covered in "Mind Hacks" about why posting flickr zeitgeist might be a distraction for people who actually want to read your blog, and there is the excellent "Mind Hacks" blog itself mindhacks.com, which does not seem to be accessible from the O'Reilly site. Both authors have their own blogs - Idiolect by Tom Stafford and Interconnected by Matt Webb.

"Mind Hacks" suggests that you can read it sequentially or dive in randomly.
Either way it is an accessible book about some of the curiously strange ways in which we think, remember, and respond, based on how we evolved and what was then and is now most important to us as biological organisms. Even better, it is totally overflowing with examples and simple exercises -- the "hacks" -- that you can do by yourself or with friends. Better yet, buy the book and give a "Mind Hacks" party! Ask your guests to open the book randomly, exclaim on the particular mental characteristic explained on that page, and then put everyone through the exercise or group discussion implied. Like, "How do you prefer your first cup of morning coffee, and how do you feel if you don't get it that way?" Pavlov got it right more than a hundred years ago.

And speaking of Pavlov's dogs, there is much in "Mind Hacks" to suggest that we humans share many of our emotions, thoughts and feelings with other animals, whose brain structures evolved similarly and whose reactions in research are so similar.

BwoB was born in October 2004 as an idea by Sean Bonner. Sean quickly brought Jonas Luster, Xeni Jardin, and Wil Wheaton on board, and for the following weeks, Jonas worked on the technical side of things. When Sri Lanka and the South East Asian region fell victim to a 9.0 earthquake and the resulting Tsunami, we knew we had to bring online what we had.

This is, where BwoB is today. We continue to add features, and will introduce a few great ones in short order, but for the time being, it’s a weblog, a forum, and a means to communicate and coordinate.

"A bunch of insensitive louts

Since 1993, an unlikely resident named Pale Male and his female companions have lived 12 stories up on a cornice of a ritzy New York apartment building. He has sired, depending upon who's telling the story, up to 23 offspring in his formerly breezy home, which had a neat view of the city's skyline and nearby Central Park.

Pale Male, a red-tailed hawk and a member of an endangered species, is inarguably the world's best-known bird. His fans have crossed oceans to watch the hawk, who for years has dutifully helped raise his families in the heart of a city rather than in the wild, as most hawks prefer.

So named because his colors are not as vibrant as most male red-tailed hawks, Pale Male was the star in a book by author Marie Winn and the subject of a PBS documentary film as well. Newspapers and television stories annually feature the hawk's adventures, and birdwatchers have been known to camp out on the street, waiting to see the hawk's offspring take flight from their 12th-floor nest.

But no more. The rich and powerful people who own the building at 927 Fifth Avenue and 74th Street apparently decided that having the hawk nest on their building was too much of an inconvenience. Bird droppings and such affronted their sense of decorum, so they had the nest destroyed and removed vital rods the hawk had used to anchor the nest to withstand strong winds.

Not all the tenants agreed with the action. Actress Mary Tyler Moore, a resident of the building for 15 years, announced she was amazed and outraged by the "insensitivity" of the action. She and her husband opposed the nest's removal, but to no avail. Numerous Pale Male fans are attempting to convince the tenants to permit the bird to rebuild its nest.

The tenants own the building, and they apparently didn't break any laws in removing the nest. They had the legal authority to do so. But Moore and others critical of them are absolutely right. The building's owners demonstrated that they are insensitive louts who have no desire to see the bigger picture that others found so appealing.

Today, top climate scientists will launch a unique website to provide commentary on the emerging new results from climate science. The site is designed as a tool for journalists and members of the public, and will provide a quick response to developing stories and provide the context sometimes missing in mainstream commentary. The discussion is restricted solely to scientific topics and will not address political issues.

"We are trying to ensure that science doesn't get trampled by politics," said Gavin Schmidt.

"We hope this site will serve as a resource that can challenge mis-representations or mis-understandings of the science as they occur in real time," said Michael Mann.

Schmidt, Mann, Stefan Rahmstorf, Rasmus Benestad, Caspar Ammann, Ray Bradley, William Connolley, Eric Steig, and Amy Clement are all contributors to the site. Bloggercorps is simple. It's a blog.

No office. No admin. No fund-raising. No funds. No staff. No meetings.

It will evolve organically based on the needs of the people who wind up using it.

For starters, here's the plan:

- The authors (a wide-ranging group comprised mainly of bloggers, activists, and tech organizations who work with non-profits) will post announcements on behalf of organizations who need help starting blogs or building blogging communities.

- The posts will be categorized according to the organization's geographical location, and in some cases its main focus issue.

- Bloggers interested in helping that particular organization can express their interest in the comments section attached to that post.

- The organization will then decide which of the volunteers it wants to follow up with.

- All arrangements will be made directly between organizations and bloggers. Bloggercorps will not mediate.

- We are not raising money to put people on planes so in most cases the idea is to match organizations located in a particular place with bloggers living in the same place.

- If situations arise in which organizations cannot find volunteers living in their area, we may be able to point them to foundations or philanthropic organizations who might be in a position to help fund travel for blogger-volunteers. But we won't do your fundraising work for you.

- Bloggercorps is non-partisan.

Marc Canter "OK - so the name of the company which will be paying bloggers to blog is Marqui.

They're helping to create a new category of services - which combines email campaigning, CMS, marketing communications and... a little bit of work flow. It's sort of like lite-weight CMS meets tools servers in the valley of the small enterprise.

I'm sure Doc will love it - as it's very DIY IT-like.

They call it "Communication Management Systems" and it actually works. It's actually pretty cool.

Anyway - so I was sitting there one day in August when they asked "how can we get into the blogosphere."

At that point I had heard that request like a 1,000 times. So I looked around the room and said "what the hell, let me give it a shot".

I am so glad as I really love and use sideblog to post links to my fotozen blog as you can see on the left, it is really neat and the only one that can do this, Viva Sideblog.

Sideblog will live on! We'll be moving to a new server over the next few weeks and it looks like we'll be picking up a helping hand for development, so Sideblog will get even better. We the Media : Grassroots Journalism by the People for the People by Dan Gillmor is a rich, insightful, valuable book about the state of the news and information media, focusing on the creativity, innovation and change brought about by the Internet. Mr. Gillmor closely examines the contributions of participatory, interactive online media, particularly the proliferation of people reading and writing web blogs, or blogs. Mr. Gillmor's premise is that a variety of online forums now often contain information, news, analysis and commentary that is different than or has a different emphasis than traditional media.

In his view, these new web forums, written and designed mostly by non-journalists, which are enabled by state-of-the art social-networking software, are both taking over some of the roles played by the mainstream news media, and putting pressures on media for change. This is particularly true now, he asserts, since millions of people worldwide read and write blogs, e.g., blogs and other online forums are not occurring in a vacuum, any more than Fox News.

Even for someone familiar with blogs, publishing and broadcasting, "We the Media" is thorough, refreshing and interesting. For someone new to blogging, or for someone who wants an exhaustive examination of the issues and ramifications, this book will be crucial. The book is also important for the background it provides about the traditional electronic and print media -- radio, television and newspapers -- their history, why they exist, whom they are run and owned by, and how they operate.

Free speech and participatory democracy are obvious interests and concerns of Mr. Gillmor, and his closest assocates. He traces political dialogue historically through the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries, expressing much concern about the real dangers to free speech now posed by governments and corporations worldwide. Part of his premise and his expressed hope is that the spread of online media access will enable more free speech, and a more informed citizenry, leading we all hope, to a better world.

Mr. Gillmor, a seasoned reporter and columnist covering Silicon Valley technology for the San Jose Mercury News, a Knight Ridder publication, knows well the topics about which he writes. He has long written his own blog, one of the first by a professional journalist, and now one of most widely read and commented on. He is a technically saavy, factual observer, a thoughtful commentator, not given to hyperbole. This is a serious book based on both statistical and anecdotal evidence, and has been commented on and corrected by scores of amateurs and professionals from the fields of software technology and journalism. One of his first anecdotes about the power of blogs to impact attitudes concerns a seminar, during which he and other celebrity bloggers in the audience posted comments about the proceedings. As people in the audience read these comments from mobile wireless devices as the meeting was still in progress, audience attitudes toward the speaker changed, which altered the tenor of the meeting. Rather like students noiselessly passing around notes in class about the stain on the teacher's tie, though in this case, the teacher, a major corporate executive, lost his job.

The point of this anecdote, and of the book itself to some extent, is that even by incrementally adding new or different information and perspectives to standard news reportage, or even to the facts being given out in a seminar, individual bloggers can create differing public perspectives, and thus, can have an impact on events.

I myself have seen numerous blog entries by otherwise ordinary people, who have blogged about events behind the scenes of major news stories, often apparently more out of a sense of 'gee-whiz' than even of trying to scoop a story. Mr. Gillmor's point is that if a critical mass of people read what an individual blogger is writing, particularly if that information is interesting and newsworthy, there will be an impact, however incremental.

He also notes that often, with today's powerful mobile technologies, individual bloggers often witness, photograph and report events that the mainstream media, even if present, miss or do not publish. Further, he suggests that we are just beginning to see the impact of low-cost, high-quality mobile devices. Online commentary about standard news reporting also keeps issues alive, he notes, by creating powerful feedback loops, which themselves become newsworthy. Mr. Gillmor offers many examples.

Mr. Gillmor is also very interested in group blogs and forums, such as Wiki-pedia, where thousands of articles are posted and edited by thousands of people. He describes many sites using new technologies, such as Technorati and Google, He suggests that such sites are not only providing "non-standard" information, but that the social networking aspect of such sites is providing people with new experiences, models and definitions of successful community involvement. He gives many examples and makes numerous recommendations for information-based enterprises that readers might undertake.

If the proliferation of personal computers connected to the Internet has given millions of people the opportunity to become media outlets, it has also made it more difficult for those of us in the audience to tune into really different, valuable viewpoints. Fortunately, for those bloggers who would find an audience and for those of us who would read refreshing perspectives, Mr. Gillmor has plenty of advice on how to proceed. Be sure to look at the sections on web sites, acknowledgements, notes and the index at the end of the book, all very worth checking out.

An open letter to Sidebloggers...

Well, it's been a little over a year since I launched Sideblog. It's been a pretty good run.

I've met a lot of people, made a lot of acquaintances, and maybe even a friend or two along the way. I've been criticized (remember the embedded advertising?) and supported, sometimes at the same time, by the same person. I had some low points along the way where it seemed like it wasn't worth it, then I'd get an e-mail from someone encouraging me to solider on (thanks Jen G., Zannah and many others).

I learned quite a bit about PHP, MySQL and Unix administration in general. I really wrote the Sideblog code as a learning exercise and a challenge; just to see if I could do it. Who knew it would turn into this?

I also learned a lot about offering free services on the web. I find it funny now, how little I knew about this. I thought that I'd offer a service supported by advertising. No one wanted that. I thought I'd try a tiered service model where the higher tier was donation supported. A little better...but not much.

I guess what I really learned is that people that are offering free services online are really engaged in a labour of love. They support their community because they like to do it. The hard work, sweat and tears are worth it when they get the pat on the back. In retrospect, I realize now that that's why I kept going.

So, here's where I'm going with this: Sideblog continues to be a labour of love for me. However, I'm finding it harder and harder to find time to support it. Flat out, I'm neglecting it. It's not being actively maintained or developed. So, instead of watching it run on autopilot or spiral into chaos, I want to move Sideblog to a new state. That state will be one of two possibilities (that I can think of right now):

1. It'll be maintained/developed/supported by others (open-source-ish).
2. It'll slip quietly into the virtual night and be a (good) memory.

So tell your friends and let's see if anyone will step forward and volunteer to support this beast. If we can't find someone by, say, the end of August, Sideblog will begin winding down in September 2004.

And, finally, I know I've appeared in this space before, crying about how donations were so low that I needed money, I couldn't keep financing it myself, etc, etc, blah, blah. Just so we're all on the same page: This time, it's not about the money. We're waaaay past the money stage here.

surprise! But it is in a nice area of London not far from Harrods (I remember thier loos used to be very nice. Back in the sixties Mum took off her emerald ring to wash her hands and forgot it on the wash basin. She telephoned the night watchman, who kindly went to look and miraculously it was still there).

The easy Hotel has kind of modular rooms, with at least, a double bed, shower and LOO from £5 a night...

The business is now being auctioned off on eBay as a form of IPO and reached almost $1000 within a few hours and is expected to skyrocket by the time the auction finishes on Tuesday 1700 GMT.

Going out of our way to find the right people.
When we announced the opening of our engineering office in Zurich, a lot of Europeans seemed pleased about the possibility of working for Google without a commute to California. Zurich draws Italians, French, Swiss, Germans, and other Europeans, and is easier to reach from most parts of the continent than the Amphitheatre Parkway exit off highway 101.

We recognize that talented engineers live in every time zone, not just Silicon Valley. That's fine with us, because when it comes to solving technical problems Google benefits from global perspectives, as well as a diversity of languages and working hours. And we want to accommodate people who want to work with us, but who may not feel like uprooting their their lives, even for Charlie's cooking.

So, if you're looking for a place to plug into Google, we're trying to make it easy for you. We're looking for talented software engineers, top programmers and visionary computer scientists to tackle everything from distributed systems and information retrieval to algorithms, UI, and scalability challenges. And of course to unplug the lava lamps occasionally so they don't overheat.

Whether you're in the market for a challenging engineering position in Mountain View, in Bangalore, or in our new Tokyo office, or somewhere really out of this world, we hope you'll look us up.

Is this thing on?
Ever since I came to Google, they've been talking about putting up an official Google blog. And now, less than 15 months later, voilà.

Oh well, it's not like we own a recently relaunched service where you can create a blog in two minutes or something. Okay, we do. (Sorry for the plug.) But I guess other Googlers have been a little busy what with all the searching. And the advertising. And filling out purchase orders for all those hard drives.

Anyway, I'm excited the blog's up. We're going to post stuff here - regular bloggy things: What Larry had for breakfast. What Sergey thinks of that Hellboy movie. Which Dawson's Creek character reminds us most of Eric.

And perhaps, news about Google, and our thoughts on whatever random events cross our horizon.

Oh, and we have email feedback too. So we hope to hear from you, as well.

Intolerance and the lack of respect for diversity represent major obstacles to achieving the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement's core aim of protecting human dignity, and have an adverse impact on key aspects of its work.

On 8 May, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and National Societies worldwide commemorate the birth in 1828 of one of the Movement's founders, Henry Dunant, who inspired the creation of the ICRC in 1863.

Based on the belief that all those injured on the battlefield had a right to receive care no matter which side they were fighting for, the principle of non-discrimination was at the very heart of the founders' earliest convictions and remains so for the Movement today.

California Senator To Block Google's Gmail By TechWeb News Securitypipeline

A California state senator will introduce legislation opposing Google's recently-announced Gmail Web-based e-mail service, citing invasion of privacy concerns.

Sen. Liz Figueroa, a Democrat from Fremont and the author of the state's "Do-Not-Call" law that lets Californians block telemarketing calls, last week sent a letter to Google urging the company to rethink its plan to roll out a free e-mail service.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is also worried about Gmail.
